IDC APPLIES RFID TECHNOLOGY IN NEW TRANSPORT iNET- FUNDED ACADEMIC/BUSINESS PROJECT TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY

The Driver Behaviour System works in real time, providing drivers with up- to- date information about changes in speed limits. As it uses radio waves rather than relying on satellite reception, as with GPS, the system continues to work in out- of- frequency areas such as tunnels. It can also be updated quickly for short term changes to speed limit, such as at road works - keeping drivers informed at all times.
The technology at the heart of the research project is a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system, which collects speed limit data by using radio waves. The technology operates via micro- chipped transmitters attached to road signs to relay information to an in-car reader. The device then notifies drivers when their speed increases above the speed limit.
Derby- based, Intelligent Distributed Control (IDC Ltd), which specialises in providing solutions for real time tracking and tracing, and has provided systems for Toyota UK, is manufacturing the prototype of the in- car device for the Driver Behaviour System.
