IDC APPLIES RFID TECHNOLOGY IN NEW TRANSPORT iNET- FUNDED ACADEMIC/BUSINESS PROJECT TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY
IDC APPLIES RFID TECHNOLOGY IN NEW TRANSPORT iNET- FUNDED ACADEMIC/BUSINESS PROJECT TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY. IDC is applying its RFID technology in a new Transport iNet –funded project to develop a Driver Behaviour System that aims to improve road safety and reduce accidents by alerting drivers – at all times - when they exceed speed limits. The £83,000 research project is a joint academic/industry collaboration involving the Universities of Derby and Loughborough, IDC Ltd and RFID tag manufacturer, CLC UK Ltd.
The Driver Behaviour System works in real time, providing drivers with up- to- date information about changes in speed limits. As it uses radio waves rather than relying on satellite reception, as with GPS, the system continues to work in out- of- frequency areas such as tunnels. It can also be updated quickly for short term changes to speed limit, such as at road works - keeping drivers informed at all times.
The technology at the heart of the research project is a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system, which collects speed limit data by using radio waves. The technology operates via micro- chipped transmitters attached to road signs to relay information to an in-car reader. The device then notifies drivers when their speed increases above the speed limit.
Derby- based, Intelligent Distributed Control (IDC Ltd), which specialises in providing solutions for real time tracking and tracing, and has provided systems for Toyota UK, is manufacturing the prototype of the in- car device for the Driver Behaviour System.
IDC is one of the leading UK companies offering complete RFID solutions. The company has successfully implemented RFID projects for asset management, brand protection and track- and- trace applications. The projects included a variety of database applications, and in two of the three cases required networking across multinational sites for leading UK companies.
Commenting upon IDC’s involvement in the project, IDC MD, Kevin Buckley, said: “We look forward to working with both universities and CDC (UK) Ltd on this ground- breaking technology, and to achieving results that benefit road users. This type of project is ideal for IDC; where partners are looking to integrate RFID, and require a solutions provider who can bring all the skills and capabilities to the table, in a tried and tested package.”
